2 thoughts. 1st, a second reading of O'Connor is essential. 2nd, think about Hazel's car as his altar and pulpit to his "non-religious religion". He is trying so hard to escape the gospel/church that once the car is gone, he gives up running away from it. Then it becomes a tragic attempt at identifying with Christ, and misguided repentance.

I have to agree that the book is kind of gripping. It keeps you on your toes and your mind engaged.
